How to Apply for a U.S. Passport While in Australia

If you are a U.S. citizen living in or visiting Australia, you can apply for a new U.S. passport, renew your passport, or replace a lost or stolen passport through the U.S. Mission to Australia, which includes the Embassy in Canberra and Consulates in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. Here’s a step-by-step guide to the process.

1. Determine the Type of Application

Before you begin, figure out which application applies to your situation:

  • First-time applicants, children under 16, or those replacing a lost/stolen passport must use Form DS-11.
  • Adult renewals (if your previous passport was issued within the last 15 years and you were over 16 when it was issued) generally use Form DS-82.

2. Complete the Application Form

All passport applications must be completed online and printed:

  • Go to the U.S. State Department’s Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC).
  • Fill out the relevant form (DS-11 or DS-82).
  • Print the form with the barcode. Do not sign until instructed at your appointment (for DS-11 applicants).

3. Gather Required Documents

You will need:

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship (previous U.S. passport, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or U.S. birth certificate).
  • Proof of identity (driver’s license, government-issued photo ID).
  • Passport photo (2×2 inches, recent, on a white background—many photo services in Australia are familiar with U.S. requirements).
  • Payment (credit card accepted at the Consulate; fees vary depending on type of passport).
  • Evidence of travel (for emergency passport applications).

For children, additional documents are required:

  • Both parents’ consent (or legal proof of sole custody).
  • Child’s birth certificate showing parental relationship.

4. Make an Appointment

All applicants must book an appointment online:

  • Visit the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Australia website.
  • Choose your nearest location (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, or Canberra).
  • Schedule a Passport Appointment.

Walk-ins are not accepted.

5. Attend Your Appointment

Bring your completed form, supporting documents, and photo to your appointment. DS-11 applicants must sign in front of a consular officer. Staff will review your application and collect fees.

6. Processing Time and Passport Delivery

  • Regular processing: Usually takes about 2–4 weeks.
  • Emergency travel: You may be eligible for a limited-validity emergency passport (issued within a few days).
  • New passports are typically returned by registered post (Express Post), so bring a prepaid envelope if required.

7. Lost or Stolen Passports

If your passport has been lost or stolen, you must complete Form DS-64 in addition to the DS-11 form. Report the loss as soon as possible to protect against identity fraud.
